The proposed action consists of taking part in the activity ´Elevator Encounters´, designed and developed by MMMM Collective. All speculactors, regardless of rank, are summoned to Queen Sofia Arts Center ground floor entrance through Nouvel Courtyard, on Friday morning, at the arranged time. El grupo especulador ha de acudir sin distinción de rango, el viernes por la mañana a los bajos del Museo Reina Sofía – entrada por el patio Nouvel - para realizar la acción “elevator encounters” diseñada por el colectivo Mmmm y bajo sus órdenes. (ver www.mmmm.tv/enencuentros-de-ascensor.htm)
How do you perceive ´the other´ in close proximity? Do you feel intimate rather than claustrophobic? Where do you put your hands? Would you avoid physical contact? Is it possible to keep track of time in these conditions? And who will be the next person to get into the booth? Each booth was less than 1sqm. Gestures and body language were over-exaggerated in such a small place. When two people were inside, it was immediately apparent who was drawn to each other and who felt uncomfortable. Curiously, the behavior and gestures of pairs of participants in the booth were often repeated. Even though they were not looking to each other, they touched their hair at the very same time, they stood there with their arms crossed or scratched their necks simultaneously. Speculactors proved to be good performers. They could already defamiliarize from themselves and act spontaneously while other participants felt shy, afraid or even ashamed about our presence and behavior. We were scolded by the organizers for not following their specific instructions!
