REQUIREMENTS
As a basic requirement, students
have to submit an official B2 Certificate or Diploma before enrolling
in the subject as specified in the Common European Framework for
Languages (B2: Upper Intermediate level), and demonstrate this level when engaged on class practices and assessment activities.
ABOUT THE COURSE
‘English for Professional and Academic
Communication’ is the name of the obligatory subject to be taught in
all UPM Schools and Faculties with the implementation of the Bologna
Plan. Prior to its introduction in the Building Engineering Degree as scheduled in the 5th semester of the studies, the subject has been included in the Curso de Adaptación syllabus over the last two years.
This course has been designed to help students who have already obtained their Degree in Arquitectura Técnica (Quantity Surveying) improve their oral and written skills to use English in academic and professional environments as demanded by most companies worldwide.
More particularly, course contents cover all four main skills, namely,
listening, reading, writing and speaking with an emphasis placed on
building construction core topics.
OBJETIVES: KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
To communicate effectively in English.
To promote self and conscious learning.
To be able to work in interdisciplinary and multicultural teams.
To differentiate between oral and written discourse dynamics.
To work with different types of academic and professional texts and genres.
To know the best job-hunting strategies in the way to professional success.
To produce effective covering letters and resumes.
To present orally specialized topics using visual aids.
METHODOLOGY
Given the fact that some students in the course hold full or part time job positions, class methodology is based on a b-(blended) learning approach so that the units including the main input and practices are uploaded on the Moodle space. Students download and read through the units as previously assigned and then feedback is provided during the face-to-face lessons.
ASSESSMENT
Owing to the on line format of the subject, students will carry out self-assessment based upon revision and consultation of the keys provided to that purpose.
